Alcovy River Greenway Collection


The Alcovy River begins in Gwinnett County and flows through western Walton and eastern Newton Counties. It converges with the South River at Lake Jackson in southern Newton and western Jasper County. The total length of the river is about 80 miles and has a watershed of over 168,000 acres.


The Alcovy River Greenway is a system of protected natural areas connected by the Alcovy River. These areas protect the river and its natural resources, including wildlife, wildlife habitat, wetlands, and water quality.


The Alcovy River Greenway Collection consists of text, images, and video clips describing the natural and cultural history of the River. Special features include:

  • data from aquatic chemical and biological surveys.
  • photographs of the river, tupelo gum swamp,
  • details concerning the cultural history of the Alcovy, including interviews and driving tour
  • report on the buffer system of the river.
  • history of the development of the Greenway Project.
